 ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Pomanders date back to the Middle Ages. Stories vary as to if they were used as ‘home perfumers’, personal healing amulets, or aromatic décor.
They were first mentioned in literature in the mid-thirteenth century and used in the late Middle Ages through the 17th century.
The name ‘pomander’ is the literal meaning of Anglo-French pomme de ambre (apple of amber aka an orange!), modified to "pomander" in Middle English.
Pomanders were first recorded in Europe in the Middle Ages and were used as Herbal Amulets that were worn around the neck or placed in the home, with the intention of protecting one from Negative Spirits, Energies including jealousy, and envy. They were also used to protect against infections, pestilence, disease, as well as the rampant smell of sickness. Intermingled with holiday décor, pomanders were used to protect the household in the same ways wearing one would do personally.
In aromatherapy oranges are used to increase joy and mental alertness.
Magically, oranges are cleansing, as well as associated with joy and success. Another magical use is based on a natural healing use as well. There are reasons folks reach for orange juice when they feel a cold coming on. The Vitamin C and antioxidant levels in oranges are high as well as fast acting.
Oranges have been used in Chinese medicine for centuries. Bitter orange was used to treat nausea and heartburn, while Mandarin oranges were used for chest pains and malaria.
The leaves of the orange tree can help with anxiety, insomnia, headaches, and asthma.
The peel from the orange is useful in aiding digestion. You can create your own bitters from orange peels and have a few drops before meals to improve digestive functioning. Vinegar infused with orange peels can also be used as an effective, non-toxic household cleaner.
Orange blossoms also having a calming and anti-inflammatory effect. Dried blossoms can be used in your bath or apply a cooled infusion to your face to brighten and relax the skin.
The point being that oranges are very healing both chemically and magically.
Cloves can be used to soothe nausea, vomiting, and even flatulence as well as to stimulate the digestive system. Furthermore, cloves are naturally antiseptic and a mild anesthetic, which makes it great for treating toothaches before you can get to the dentist as it contains a chemical called eugenol. Clove Oil is also known to repel mosquitos.
Magically cloves support clarity of mind and focus, cleanse and clear energies around us that gather and accumulate as we go through our day.
This pairing is a real one-two punch both magically and scientifically for your well being!
